As I headed to my car, the front door suddenly opened and two happy voices yelled, “Are you home Grammie?”
Hugging my two rambunctious grandsons, I sighed to myself, “Looks like another missed yoga class!”
As a dedicated Svaroopa® yogi, my bi-weekly classes at River Time Yoga are critical. I look forward to these calming, instructive sessions and compulsively plan my week accordingly. Being semi-retired, one would think attending regularly scheduled sessions would be easy. Unfortunately, life is not always easy. Recently I've been besieged by last minute work issues, rescheduled meetings and unexpected visits from beloved grandchildren — all happening during my usual yoga class times!!! What to do???
Fortunately, I have a daily practice!
Several years ago, with instruction and encouragement from my River Time Yoga teachers, I began a daily practice routine. Most mornings — blurry eyed and still in pajamas — I enter my “yoga room,” drape my legs over a blanket stack and sink into my own special bliss. With help from candles, incense and soft music, I begin with Ujjayi breathing, then progress up my spine with basic Svaroopa® yoga poses, finishing with Shavasana for deep relaxation. Depending on my day's agenda, this practice will last anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour.
For me, daily practice is very important, but it will never replace my bi-weekly classes. Instructive practice combined with consistent daily practice keeps me going – but the unexpected still happens! When it does and I have to miss a scheduled class, it’s reassuring to know that the Magic Four is waiting to “get me unstuck” the following morning!
