Marlene is the director of River Time Yoga. She loves to share yoga practice with new and continuing students from all walks of life. Throughout the years, students have appreciated her clear and compassionate instruction. Marlene’s own yoga study and practice began in 1978, and she has been teaching yoga since 1987.
Before completing the 685-hour certification as a Svaroopa® yoga teacher, Marlene was certified in Kripalu yoga at the 500-hour level. She was then led to Svaroopa® yoga, finding that it fulfilled yoga’s promise of personal transformation and also healed her painful sacroiliac joint misalignment. Teaching Svaroopa® yoga exclusively since 2005, Marlene has seen students benefit from consistent practice and enjoy healing as well as transformation on all levels. She is also certified in Embodyment® Yoga Therapy, a related healing modality offered in private sessions.
In 2009, Marlene retired from a 25-year career as a technical writer and editor in the computer industry. Prior to that, she earned a Ph.D. from Boston College. She taught literature and writing at The College of Wooster in Ohio, The College of The Holy Cross in Massachusetts, and Boston College. As an adjunct professor at Boise State University, she has taught Writing for the Biological Sciences.
Now a Certified Introductory Svaroopa® Teacher (CIST), Betsy Ayers was introduced to Svaroopa® yoga by teacher Jody Benson in Caldwell ID in 1998. Betsy experienced the power of using simple poses to quiet the mind. Betsy continued her Svaroopa® yoga practice with teachers Marlene Gast CSYT and Carolyn Beaver CSYT in bi-weekly classes and yearly Svaroopa® yoga weekend immersions. Through her consistent personal practice, Betsy has healed her very painful plantar fasciitis.
Betsy loves connecting with students and teaching them a yoga practice that decompresses the spine, ends back pain, and dissolves neck and shoulder tensions. Betsy finds it especially rewarding to see how the release of stress enables everyone to sink into the healing state of deep relaxation by the end of each class.
Betsy took her first yoga class for stress reduction at Creighton University, Omaha NE, where she earned her Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) degree in 1979. She went on to specialize in women’s health, working in Obstetrics at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. She met her husband Art, a Harvard biology professor, while cross-country skiing in New Hampshire, and their first daughter, Sadie, was born in Boston. After five years in the Boston area, Betsy and family moved to Orefield, PA where Betsy continued with occasional yoga classes as well as work in community hospitals and birth centers with midwives.
During the next five years, two more daughters, Emma and Hannah, were born. Betsy became a volunteer accredited La Leche Leader in 1989.
Moving with her family to Caldwell, ID in 1991, Betsy joined St Luke’s as a certified childbirth educator and became an internationally board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) in 1993. In addition to teaching Svaroopa® yoga, Betsy currently works as a Lactation Consultant with breastfeeding families at St Luke’s Meridian and in the community as a La Leche Leader. She enjoys bird watching, scrapbooking and reading mysteries.
